STARTING tomorrow (Saturday August 11th) and running until Sunday the 19th, Málaga is the place to be, as the city’s residents celebrate their annual festival or Feria. Every town in Andalucía experiences its own week of summer madness when feria week takes over, work is mostly abandoned for the duration and a spirit of hedonism is in the air.

During feria week, there really is dancing in the streets and Málaga’s is famous throughout Spain for the sheer scale of its celebrations.

Millions of people are set to enjoy the incoming weekend heatwave in the Costa del Sol as the world-famous Malaga Fair, or Feria, is set to take place.

Despite the continued doom and gloom of the recession, which has resulted in severe cost-cutting in various services at local, national and regional levels, Málaga’s Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Damian Caneda, said this year’s feria will be as spectacular as ever, with the usual array of booths in Plaza de la Constitución the main square at the end of Calle Larios) and Plaza de la Marina (opposite the beginning of Calle Larios), where there will also be flamenco performances.

The atmospheric Plaza de la Merced will feature a variety of craft stalls and visitors will also be able to sample some fantastic local dishes while, for the first time this year, Calle Alcazabilla will be the venue for the Children’s Magical Medieval Fayre; a series of theatre, magic and animation events to teach youngsters all about Spain’s medieval period.

Another first is delivered by the Youth Fair Centre, which will be located in the Plaza de Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás, and aims to expose the best of more contemporary music. The city’s Department of Culture is aiming to promote music throughout the period of the feria in all the historic areas and has organised a full programme of folk music and dance.

As usual there will also be performances by popular musical acts and this year Butterfly Effect, India Martinez, John Valderrama, Rosa Lopez, Macaco and Pitingo, amongst others, will be appearing at various venues.

This year marks the 525th anniversary of the Málaga Feria and on Sunday 19th of August a parade will mark this great milestone that commemorates the re-conquest of the city from the Moors by the Catholic monarchs or Reyes Católicos.

Night Feria

But the Malaga Feria has two distinct faces.

While the day feria takes place in the city centre itself, and has more of a family atmosphere, the real dancing and drinking action takes place in the night fair located in the municipal fairground, or recinto ferial, on the outskirts of the city by the Palacio de Congresos.

Here dozens of casetas each with different themes are lined side-by-side each each attracting a different crowd, charging different prices and blasting out varying styles of music. So if you’re planning to attend the night feria have a look at this plan of the casetas.

Altavista Property Spain | Saudi Arabia’s Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz to invest in Estepona

Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz

Hot on the heels of the news about the huge amount of Qatari money that will be dedicated to developing and improving the area in and around Marbella’s La Bajadilla port comes the very welcome report of an equally sizeable investment in Estepona.

While abounding in personality and authenticity, Estepona has traditionally lacked the same degree of international attention as its glamorous sister, so the confirmation that Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, heir to Saudi Arabia’s throne, plans to plough millions of dollars into the town must be music to the ears of Mayor José María García Urbano.

Prince Salman’s plans involve the construction of 1,477 properties in the popular El Paraíso area of the town and the complex will include a six-star hotel. While six and seven-star hotels are relatively commonplace in Dubai, offering a mind-boggling level of service, this will be a first for Estepona; giving guests the chance to enjoy the experience of discovering how royalty feels.

Planning permission for this project was first applied for in 2008 and the Junta de Andalucía still has officially to rubber stamp the deal, but few doubt that the Prince will be given the necessary clearance. It is believed that the project will net Estepona’s hard-pressed town hall a total of two million euros.

Prince Salman is already well known as a great fan of Estepona and is expected to arrive to spend some time at his opulent holiday home sometime this summer with a prince’s entourage.

His royal status apart, Prince Salman is also Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and started his political career at the tender age of 19, when his father, King Abdulaziz, appointed him Emir of Riyadh, where he gained a reputation as a man who disliked corruption. Now 77 years old and with many years of experience behind him, the Prince is said to be an experienced and skilful politician who enjoys cultivating close relationships with the world’s most influential journalists.

Internationally Prince Salman is also very active, despite having experienced a stroke that has permanently weakened his left arm but has not affected his stamina; in recent months he has visited President Obama and the UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron, and pretty soon he will once again be turning his attention to this region as he focuses on development plans that will provide a boost for the town’s economy.
