Michael Liggan | Politicians’ Picnic

August 28, 2012 in Altavista property, AltaVista Property Marbella, altavistaproperty.com, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

“If you go out to the beach today, you’re of a big surprise”. Well, may be not, but you could run into one of several politicians enjoying their summer holidays here in Spain.

Michael Liggan News

All three of the major British political parties are agreed: Spain is still the destination of choice for holidaymakers from every walk of life, whatever your political affiliation! Messrs. Cameron, Clegg and Blair seem happy to lead the way, settling down to enjoy some Spanish hospitality, sunshine and relaxation.

On the Costa del Sol, former British Prime Minster Tony Blair and his wife Cherie have been spotted visiting San Pedro Alcántara’s Catholic Church and strolling around the small town located just outside Marbella. Reports claim the couple are staying at a villa in Benahavis for two weeks, so hopefully they’ll get to taste some of the delights on offer in this hilltop village renowned for its fantastic restaurants, galleries and boutiques.

Over in Pollenca on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, regular visitors to Spain, David Cameron (British Prime Minster) and his wife Samantha, were photographed this week enjoying a quick coffee without the children. Mr Cameron, obviously eager not to let his hair down too much on their short family getaway, looked ready to jump back into action if necessary, choosing to wear dark jeans, loafers and a long sleeved shirt despite the high temperatures.

Perhaps he was officially ‘on call’ as his Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, is also partaking in a spot of rest and relaxation under the Iberian sun. He is visiting the birthplace of his wife, Miriam, and no doubt spending time with their extended family some of whom still live in the small town in Valladolid, central Spain.

But it’s not just the British politicians who are getting in on the holiday act. José María Aznar, former Spanish Prime Minster was spied heading down to the beach from his villa in Guadalmina with his wife, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella. He joins the annual August influx of Madrileños making the most of the beaches, restaurants, bars and shops in Puerto Banús and Marbella.

Now if they could all just put their heads together over a glass of Sangria and sort out the global economic crisis, we would all have something to celebrate!

Michael Liggan | Tivoli World: 40 years of fun on the Costa del Sol

August 28, 2012 in Altavista property, AltaVista Property Marbella, Altavista Spain, altavistaproperty.com, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

This year one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular tourist attractions celebrates four successful decades. Located in Benalmádena, this entertainment park still offers an excellent day out for all the family, with a 60-metre Free Fall Tower, the Techno Jump, which is specifically designed to test the nerves, and the ever-popular Passage of Terror.  The youngest members of the family never fail to enjoy a tour of the park in the little sightseeing train.

Michael Liggan news

However, over the years Tivoli World has also gained a name for its excellent shows, which range from classic magic acts and children’s shows to full-scale theatrical productions. This year, in order to mark the park’s 40th year, visitors will be able to enjoy a performance from the Russian Circus, entry to which will be free to all who have paid their usual entry fee to Tivoli World.

Since it first opened its gates in May 1972, Tivoli World has played host to some major names in the world of music, including the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, Julio Iglesias, Alejandro Sanz, Isabel Pantoja, Cuba’s Antonio Machín and Lola, Lolita, Antonia, Carmona and Rosario Flores. During this time Tivoli has also welcomed more than 30 million guests, who have arrived to enjoy the constantly changing rides and shows or to eat at one of the park’s restaurants.

Perhaps Tivoli World’s great success and longevity can best be described as a perfect balance between continuity (many of the performers have been appearing in shows at the park for several decades) and innovation (the attractions and rides need to continue to provide the adrenaline rush that visitors anticipate).

The fact that this extraordinarily successful entertainment park has continued to thrive throughout good times and bad is a tribute to its owners, who have continued to develop it. Bent Olsen built and developed Tivoli in the first place and it was later bought by the Grupo Tremón, who continue to create and invest.

One point of real continuity has been the involvement of Espectáculos Mundo, the company that has been responsible for the theatrical productions since the earliest days.

Daniel Rodríguez, the company’s director, stated that the longstanding relationship between Espectáculos Mundo and the park’s owners could be attributed to Tivoli World being like ‘one big family’.

Like many big families, Benalmádena’s most popular venue has been through some transformations, but its ability to adapt to changing tastes and demands means that it is quite likely that the Costa del Sol’s residents and visitors will be celebrating its centenary in 2072!

Michael Liggan – Millions expected for this weekend’s Malaga Feria

Malaga Feria – Michael Liggan (c) A B-D

STARTING tomorrow (Saturday August 11th) and running until Sunday the 19th, Málaga is the place to be, as the city’s residents celebrate their annual festival or Feria. Every town in Andalucía experiences its own week of summer madness when feria week takes over, work is mostly abandoned for the duration and a spirit of hedonism is in the air.

Michael Liggan Local Events

During feria week, there really is dancing in the streets and Málaga’s is famous throughout Spain for the sheer scale of its celebrations.

Millions of people are set to enjoy the incoming weekend heatwave in the Costa del Sol as the world-famous Malaga Fair, or Feria, is set to take place.

Despite the continued doom and gloom of the recession, which has resulted in severe cost-cutting in various services at local, national and regional levels, Málaga’s Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Damian Caneda, said this year’s feria will be as spectacular as ever, with the usual array of booths in Plaza de la Constitución the main square at the end of Calle Larios) and Plaza de la Marina (opposite the beginning of Calle Larios), where there will also be flamenco performances.

The atmospheric Plaza de la Merced will feature a variety of craft stalls and visitors will also be able to sample some fantastic local dishes while, for the first time this year, Calle Alcazabilla will be the venue for the Children’s Magical Medieval Fayre; a series of theatre, magic and animation events to teach youngsters all about Spain’s medieval period.

Another first is delivered by the Youth Fair Centre, which will be located in the Plaza de Fray Alonso de Santo Tomás, and aims to expose the best of more contemporary music. The city’s Department of Culture is aiming to promote music throughout the period of the feria in all the historic areas and has organised a full programme of folk music and dance.

As usual there will also be performances by popular musical acts and this year Butterfly Effect, India Martinez, John Valderrama, Rosa Lopez, Macaco and Pitingo, amongst others, will be appearing at various venues.

This year marks the 525th anniversary of the Málaga Feria and on Sunday 19th of August a parade will mark this great milestone that commemorates the re-conquest of the city from the Moors by the Catholic monarchs or Reyes Católicos.

Night Feria

But the Malaga Feria has two distinct faces.

While the day feria takes place in the city centre itself, and has more of a family atmosphere, the real dancing and drinking action takes place in the night fair located in the municipal fairground, or recinto ferial, on the outskirts of the city by the Palacio de Congresos.

Here dozens of casetas each with different themes are lined side-by-side each each attracting a different crowd, charging different prices and blasting out varying styles of music. So if you’re planning to attend the night feria have a look at this plan of the casetas.

For a plan of the casetas see this pdf

Michael Liggan | Marbella Starlite Concerts kicks off in style with George Benson at the Quarry

July 26, 2012 in AltaVista Property Marbella, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

George Benson has Starlite Look in His Eyes… Whether by design or by a stroke of  completely coincidental, yet genius  synchronicity, it was fitting that 10 times Grammy winner, vocal superstar and guitar legend George Benson should kick off The Starlite Festival, the most ambitious summer concert programme ever staged in Marbella. Photography by Gary Edwards.

Michael Liggan - George Benson

Not only is George Benson one of the most loved and regular performers in Marbella, having played many times since the 80s at the Plaza de Toros and latterly in the 90s and Noughties at the Puente Romano Tennis Club, but Give Me the Night, the hugely successful  hit song which has to be his best known, and could be considered his personal anthem, includes the line,  ” When I see that starlight look in your eyes…”

Organisation
It was to be a while before the eager crowd could enjoy that pivotal moment in the evening, owing to serious organizational hiccups which it is hoped can be blamed on first night nerves. Following what can only be described as a shambolic start to the evening, as the glammed-up Marbella crowd trudged across the dusty car park, ruining their high heels, to the inadequate ticket offices, where they waited in chaotic queues to pick up tickets from staff who had apparently lost their booking lists, along with dozens of disappearing tickets.

The ticket debacle took almost two hours to clear, and crowds were then ferried to the event on a stream of shuttle buses driving up and down the long and winding road to the new Starlite venue located in the old Auditorium of La Cantera de Nagueles, in the quarry that was used to dig out the rock which was used to build Puerto Banús some four decades ago.

Venue
Impressive Hollywood-style beams of  lighting swept across the sky, illuminating the drive up to the venue, which loomed alluringly, a beacon of neon amid the darkness of the pines lining the twisting mountain track.  Once inside, the new venue was worth the wait. Much more than a temporary auditorium,  you walk into a bar-lounge area with trendy furniture, food stalls, and a whole restaurant area which is being run by El Bulli, Ferran Adriá’s temple to high cuisine. Chef Paco Roncero has prepared a menu of gourmet tapas which have to be eaten to be believed.

The queues to buy tickets, to then queue again at bars and food stalls was heavily criticized… The whole process takes away the spontaneity and pleasure of the experience.  This is supposed to be a chic Marbella venue, not the feria…so why the tokens..?  The beer and wine had also run out before the concert was over, so again, the organization was poor. With the cost of a bottle of water, coke or beer at 8€, and a Vodka and tonic at 13€ the venue is going to lose it’s attraction from many people.

Magic of George

Luckily, George Benson and his band – did not disappoint, and the concert itself was worth the frustrations along the way. The auditorium itself is excellent – with long rows  of seats and live video screens giving great visual access to the stage.  Playing to a packed house in the new 6 million euro purpose built venue, Benson was noticeably moved to be back in Marbella.  He chatted fondly of playing at the old bull ring, and revealed that Marbella and Puerto Banús are two of his favourite places to party.

Starting his set with two long instrumentals, the audience was left in no doubt as to his musical prowess, literally caressing his guitar as he plays his smooth brand of jazz funk. And at 69, George’s voice continues to be a powerful instrument in its own right, and the audience showed their appreciation from the start as he belted out his hits in that unique deep molasses tone of his.  With a dynamic band to back him, Benson’s classics carried the crowd on a musical journey – many of them  no doubt reminiscing about the days when they first heard Benson sing.  It was Turn Your Love Around that got the crowd up on their feet, with dozens flocking to the stage to boogie on down just a few feet away from the man himself.   Give the Night, the Grammy winning George Benson hit, produced by Quincy Jones, and the one the crowd was waiting for, was the highlight of the night, although following a quick break from the stage, Benson bounded back to take Starlite’s centre stage with his brilliant feelgood  track On Broadway as the encore the crowd so craved and deserved.

Michael Liggan – Marbella’s all year summer

July 10, 2012 in Altavista property, AltaVista Property Marbella, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

Many vistors come to Spains Costa del Sol for the delicious seafood, others for the beaches, and others to experience the region’s rich traditions and culture. But for most the real attraction is the Costa del Sols weather. Marbella in particular has it’s own micro climate which ensures glorious outdoor living weather for almost the whole year, three hundred days plus of sunshine.

Michael Liggan Costa del Sol Blog

Michael Liggan“This summer most of North Africa has baked in a heat wave while Marbella’s unique climate has kept the region relativly cooler. As a bank of  hot air moved northwards, many parts Spain were under heat alerts, in some places temperatures reached as high as 39 degrees. Yet in the Costa del Sol towns like Marbella or Malaga situated not more than 14 kilometers from the African coastline were not so affected by a North African heat wave, so whats the explanation?” asks Michael Liggan of Altavista Property Spain. It’s the Magic of the Mountains explains Altavista Property’s Michael Liggan. Marbella is flanked to the north by the mountains of the Cordillera Penibética, offering protection from the rain in winter and the  heat in summer. This natural protection with the coastal breeze keeps Marbella a few degrees cooler in the summer and in the winter works the other way round to keep it a few degrees warmer during the winter. The protection offered by the mountain has made Marbella an ideal city to both live and visit for tourists in search of excellent weather.

Michael Liggan Altavista Property

The Costa del Sol remains one of the most visited areas of Spain due mainly to the fact of it’s weather. Many people who have visited the area return again and again to enjoy the rich local customs and to enjoy the fresh food. Many also have  brought real estate as an investment or a home. “Property prices in Spain have been in decline for several years which has made many places which ten years ago were beyond the reach of many now affordable.” – says Michael Liggan. If you are thinking to take advantage of the availability of now afforable properties in and around Marbella then look no further than Michael Liggan’s Altavista Property. Michael Liggan – Arab investors buy Marbella hotel

July 9, 2012 in Altavista property, AltaVista Property Marbella, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

A MARBELLA hotel which has been closed since 2004 has been purchased by a company funded with Arab money, local Press reports.

Michael Liggan on Don Miguel MarbellaThe 502 Hotel Don Miguel is set to undergo an extensive refurbishment lasting approximately two years before it reopens as part of a hotel chain.

Union officials have confirmed an a agreement has been reached to pay off 81 hotel staff which had been fighting for compensation since the hotel was shut eight years ago.

The Town Hall at Marbella under the leadership of Angeles Muñoz has seen its recent efforts to woo Arab investors pay off. The owner of Malaga Football Club, the Qatari Sheikh, has fronted the massive La Bajadilla port project taking place in Marbella which will not only lead to jobs locally during the construction process, but will add another string to the bow of the city.

“The buzz created since Michelle Obama’s 2010 Marbella visit seems to have been a definite turning point for the area,” says Michael Liggan, CEO of Marbella-based Altavista Properties. “We’ve seen a marked increase in interest from foreign buyers recently. Although Spanish property prices are forecasted to drop further, I would not be surprised to see them start to rise with increased demand in hotspots like Marbella or Mallorca,” Michael Liggan adds.

Michael Liggan – Why Marbella gets my vote everytime

July 6, 2012 in AltaVista Property Marbella, Michael Liggan, www.altavistaproperty.com by Michael Liggan

Marbella is known as a the playground of the rich and famous and many have bought luxurious villas here and spend months here. The almost all year long Costa del Sol sunshine coupled with many lovely beaches is also big attraction. Michael Liggan tells what he like best about Marbella

Michael Liggan explains why he loves Marbella

The old town of marbella is a jewel of natural charm with its whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets all set against the backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains, in all the years that I have been living I never tire of this view, said Michael Liggan of Altavista Property.

Michael Liggan on Marbella

The jewel that is Marbella set between the mountains and the sea

There are plenty of things to do during the day if you do not want to be on the beach, Marbella has some of the best golf courses in Europe, and attracts golfers from all around the world from people who just come for a golfing holiday to seasoned professionals in between golf tournaments, another popular sport is tennis which Marbella is also well known for and it has a number of quality tennis clubs where top coaches are on hand to help improve your game, on the beaches there are various watersports to be had from wakeboarding to the banna ride and jet ski’s of course, a favourite of mine said Michael Liggan.
An afternoon shopping in Marbella is also must, Marbella is full of classy chic boutiques lining the winding cobbled streets of the old town and a pleasent afternoon can be had wondering around even if it is only to window shop, Lucy Michael Liggan assitstant has informed me.
Marbella’s most famous attraction is without doubt the world famous marina of Puerto Banus where the rich and famous moor their multi million pound water palaces. A particular past time I enjoy when I am relaxing is to sit in one of the many marina bars and watch the world go by claims Michael Liggan.
Eating out in Marbella is another one of my favourite past times in Marbella revealed Michael Liggan as you would expect some places can be quite expensive but there are many places to choose from and cuisine from around the globe can be found. The Spanish national dish paella has to be experienced say Michael Liggan and many of the beach restuarants offer great paella at reasonable prices.

The nightlife in Marbella is mainly centred Puerto Banus with many of the nightclubs and bars lining the water front and set along side the famous casino.

Michael Liggan of Altavista Property

Recently a number of Costa del Sol apartments have become available and are proving popular with the middle market clients as prices have continued to fall, making Marbella affordable to many  who in the past were priced out the market, this is good news for buyers looking to invest in real estate or to buy a home explains Michael Liggan.
